Stephen Ministers are a group of dedicated lay persons, having the gift of compassion, and believing as we 'carry each other's burdens, in this way we fulfill the law of Christ' (Galatians 6:2) Their mission is to provide personal, confidential, caring Christian support to those experiencing a difficult time in life.
As a volunteer for Stephen Ministry you will receive 50 hours of training and monthly continuing education with a Stephen Leader. The training embraces the skills of compassionate listening by a friend who can provide helpful resources, care and support for a wide variety of life issues - where there is illness, where there are work-related problems, where there is personal or family changes, to the elderly and/or their children.
Acceptance into the Stephen Ministry program involves a willingness to serve at least two years, commit to seeing your care receiver at least one hour per week, in addition to the initial training and continuing skill enrichment.

Stephen Ministry provides a one-on-one caring and confidential relationship with a trained lay person who will offer comfort, Christian love, and support during particularly challenging times. Working closely with our clergy, a Stephen Minister is...
* A dedicated Christian carefully trained and commissioned to provide confidential in-depth caring.
* Someone who will visit with you weekly, listen, offer resources and referrals if needed; pray with you and for you.
* A caring person - desiring to offer his or her support to help others deal responsibly with their feelings.
* A trained lay person - having developed helping skills through intensive coursework and supported by the clergy.
* A friend who comes in when the rest of the world goes out.
A Stephen Minister is not a professional counselor or psychologist, a social worker, an expert in law, or superficial visitor who is 'touching base' one time ... but a concerned Christian desiring to help a friend in a time of need.
Are you experiencing a difficult time due to serious illness, death of a loved one, loss of job, or a change in marital status - or just experiencing a lonely or difficult time in life?
Consider allowing a Stephen Minister to walk with you on your journey to wholeness.
How do I request a Stephen Minister?
Please contact a member of clergy or the Stephen Ministry leader at your church. (St. Luke's is Becky Williams, RN @ 926.5343) You may confidentially discuss with them the need for a Stephen Minister for yourself or someone you know. A Stephen Ministery will be assigned only with the permission of the person in need.
