March 10: Lenten Evensong

February 7, 2019

The St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Parish Choir will lead an Evensong at 5:30 pm on Sunday, March 10, the first Sunday of Lent. The service will include hymns, scripture readings, prayers, responses and a performance of the beloved Requiem by Gabriel Fauré.

Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) ranks among the most influential French composers, linking the end of nineteenth-century Romanticism with the beginnings of twentieth-century music.  His Requiem and Pavane rank among the most popular in ongoing lists of serious and religious music. Fauré began composing the Requiem in 1887, revised and expanded it over the years, and produced a final version in 1901. This version of the work lasts about 35 minutes and is scored for Soprano and Baritone soloists, SATB chorus, chamber orchestra and organ. The Latin text of its first six movements is taken from the Catholic Mass for the Dead.  Fauré omits much of the traditional Dies Irae, choosing instead to include a straightforward Pie Jesu for soprano solo. The text of the seventh movement, In paradisum, comes from the burial liturgy.

About the Requiem Fauré is quoted as saying, “Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest.”

The Evensong at St. Luke’s is free and open to the public. St. Luke’s is located at 8833 Goodwood Boulevard in Baton Rouge. If you have questions or need directions, please call the St. Luke’s Church Office at (225) 926-5343.
