Aug. 25: Five Wishes

July 29, 2019

Our son, Jon, has always had a unique perspective on life. I’ll always remember having this conversation with him about end-of-life. I asked him, “If I was quite sick, and you were told that measures could be taken that I would live, but be in pain, or if nature should take its course, what would you tell them to do?” He looked absolutely horrified and said, “I would tell them to call my sister.” I had to keep from laughing, and then told him, “Try again; think about how I have lived, what are my values, and what would I prefer to have happen?” He replied, “I would tell them to let nature take its course.” Yes, that was the right answer…but without this conversation, he may not have known what I want.

The Five Wishes® is one way of addressing the issues surrounding dying. As an Advanced Directive document, it's a gift to your family at a time when difficult decisions may need to be made. These wishes are: the person selected to make health care decisions when one can’t, the kind of medical treatment one wants, how comfortable one wants to be, how one wants to be treated by others, and finally, what one wants their loved ones to know.

I invite you, your friends and families, to come to this program on August 25th at 10 am, in the Library at St. Luke’s. The Five Wishes® forms will be available, as well as information about making funeral plans in advance, the columbarium, information about organ donation and information about donations to medical schools. Please call the church office to register, 926-5343, or by email, bwilliams@stlukesbr.org. I hope to see you then.

Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of death: Grant to us your servants so to follow in faith where you have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you and wake up in your likeness; for your tender mercies sake. Amen.

-Book of Common Prayer, pg. 504

Faithfully yours,

Becky Williams
