Reading Recommendations for Advent

November 29, 2019

Fr. Chris Golding put together a short list of reading and reflections for the Advent season. Take a few minutes to look it over and hopefully find something new. These books are available online from BetterWorldBooks, Book Depository, or Amazon. Happy Reading!

Preparing for Christmas by Richard Rohr:

This 2012 book is my new purchase for Advent this year. Catholic Priest and Franciscan brother, Fr. Richard Rohr continues to advance a unique, transcendent thinking about the nature of Christ and the universe. Giving us daily reflections Rohr invites us to consider the “adult Christ, the Cosmic Christ,” who dwells with us and all humanity throughout the world. Rohr is our perfect companion as St. Luke’s begins our new partnership with the Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge.

When God Comes Down by James Harnish:

Also from 2012, I’ve been blessed through this book in seasons past. This advent study for adults gives you five bite-sized reflections to prepare to celebrate that ‘holy day’ when “God came down among us in human flesh.” Drawing on the classic Advent themes of watching, waiting, and preparing, Methodist Pastor James A. Harnish offers key passages of Scripture, reflections, questions to ponder, and a brief prayer to help focus us in this holy season.

An Adult Christ at Christmas by Raymond E. Brown

A classic text from one of the best-known U.S. New Testament Scholars, this slim volume offers essays on the three biblical Christmas stories from the Gospels according to Matthew and Luke. I review this text each year during the Advent season. Brown reminds us that the “appealing stories of Jesus’ birth and early life are the entire gospel story in miniature.” Theologically rich, Brown’s work offers examples of how we might approach the infancy narratives in a simple format for a wide-ranging audience.
