Oh, Phase 2, Where are you?

Updated: Jun 19

On May 15, Louisiana entered Phase 1 of reopening. This will be in place until at least June 5, and then it will be known whether Phase 1 will continue, or stricter guidelines will be in place, or Phase 2 will start.

As noted in NOLA.com, the criteria for beginning Phase 2 are that a state or region must have no evidence of a rebound in coronavirus infections and satisfy the criteria to enter Phase 1 a second time. According to White House guidelines, states were allowed to begin Phase 1 after meeting the following criteria:

Symptoms: Must be on a downward trajectory of influenza-like illnesses and COVID-like syndromic cases reported within a 14-day period

Cases: Must be on a downward trajectory of documented cases and positive tests as a percent of total tests within a 14-day period

Hospitals: Must treat all patients without crisis care and have a robust testing program in place for at-risk healthcare workers, including emerging antibody testing.

So on we continue, wearing masks, practicing social distancing, washing hands, and doing all of those things that have helped slow the spread of this pandemic. Though things have changed in ways unimaginable at even the very beginning of March, hopefully, the new world that emerges will be like this:

COVID Poem

When this is over,

may we never again

take for granted

A handshake with a stranger

Full shelves at the store

Conversations with neighbors

A crowded theatre

Friday night out

The taste of communion

A routine checkup

The school rush each morning

Coffee with a friend

The stadium roaring

Each deep breath

A boring Tuesday

Life itself.

When this ends,

may we find

that we have become

more like the people

we wanted to be

we were called to be

we hoped to be

and may we stay

that way--better

for each other

because of the worst.
