Christ the King Sunday to Feature Dr. Richard Webb on the Live Oak Organ

As part of our annual observance of Christ the King Sunday on November 23, Terry Bowman, Director of Music, has invited Dr. Richard Webb to provide the Offertory Music, featuring the Allen Organ that St. Luke’s received from Live Oak Church this past summer.

Dr. Webb is a cradle-born Episcopalian who joined St. Luke’s and our choir’s tenor section at Terry’s invitation after retiring as Organist from Baton Rouge’s First United Methodist Church several years ago. Terry shared that he was delighted when Dr. Webb agreed to demonstrate the advanced features of the Live Oak Organ and offer a musical interpretation that reflects the majesty and splendor celebrated on Christ the King Sunday.

Dr. Webb brings a distinguished background in both performance and education. He is Professor and Dean Emeritus of the College of Arts and Humanities at Southern University and has previously served as Dean of the College and Chief Academic Officer at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, as well as Chair of the Departments of Music at San Francisco State University and East Tennessee State University.

He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in musicology with a minor in art history from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, along with Master of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in organ performance from Ohio University, which honored him with a Distinguished Alumnus Award for Achievement in Music.

Characterized in reviews as “a musician foremost” and “an artist of clear aesthetic vision served by elegant technical mastery,” Dr. Webb has performed widely as both a soloist and collaborative artist. He is a member of the Louisiana Artists Roster and a Louisiana Division of the Arts Fellow.

We look forward to celebrating Christ the King Sunday with Dr. Webb’s inspiring music and the powerful sound of our organ.
